The Best Time to Visit Tanzania: A Month-by-Month Safari Guide

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the experience you have depends enormously on when you go. The light changes. The animals move. The crowds thin or swell. Understanding the rhythm of the land is the first step to planning a safari that exceeds every expectation.

The Two Seasons

Tanzania has two primary seasons that shape the safari calendar:

The Dry Season (June – October) is the classic safari window. Vegetation thins, water sources concentrate, and wildlife gathers in predictable, spectacular numbers. This is peak season — and for good reason.

The Green Season (November – May) is split by the short rains (November–December) and the long rains (March–May). January and February sit in between — warm, lush, and often overlooked by travelers who don't know better.

Month by Month

June – October: The Golden Window

This is Tanzania at its most iconic. The Serengeti's golden grasses, the Ngorongoro Crater teeming with predators, and the Great Migration thundering through the northern corridor.

  • June–July: The wildebeest river crossings begin in the Masai Mara/northern Serengeti. Dramatic, unpredictable, and utterly unforgettable.
  • August–September: Peak migration. Dry conditions mean exceptional game viewing across all parks.
  • October: The migration begins its southward journey. Fewer crowds, still outstanding wildlife.

Best for: First-time safari travelers, the Great Migration, Big Five sightings, Ngorongoro Crater.

Lodges to consider: Four Seasons Serengeti, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.

January – February: The Hidden Gem

The short rains have passed. The Serengeti's southern plains are carpeted in green, and this is calving season — over 500,000 wildebeest calves born in a matter of weeks. Predator activity is extraordinary.

  • Fewer visitors than peak season
  • Exceptional photography — lush landscapes and dramatic skies
  • Calving season in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area)

Best for: Wildlife photography, budget-conscious luxury travelers, those who want space and solitude.

November – December: Short Rains

Brief afternoon showers refresh the landscape without disrupting game drives. Migratory birds arrive, the bush turns vivid green, and rates at many lodges drop significantly.

Best for: Birdwatchers, returning visitors, value-seekers.

March – May: Long Rains

The most challenging season for travel — some roads become impassable and certain camps close. However, for the adventurous traveler, the rewards are real: near-empty parks, dramatically reduced rates, and a Tanzania that feels entirely your own.

Best for: Experienced safari travelers, those seeking solitude, extended stays.

Zanzibar: Year-Round, With Nuance

If you're combining your safari with a Zanzibar extension — and you should — the island's best weather runs June through October and December through February. The long rains (April–May) bring heavy downpours, but even then, the beaches are beautiful and the resorts are quiet.

Tulia Zanzibar and the Royal Zanzibar Beach Resort are exceptional year-round, but the turquoise water is at its most vivid and calm during the dry months.

Our Recommendation

For most travelers, July through September offers the most complete Tanzania experience — the Great Migration, outstanding game viewing, and the best weather. But if you're flexible, January and February offer something equally special with far fewer people and a landscape that will take your breath away.

The truth is, there is no bad time to visit Tanzania. There is only the right time for you.
